I’ve decided to start a new series on my blog. Every Friday I want to recommend a book to you. These are books that I love and can’t stop thinking about. My goal is to introduce you to some books that you may not have picked up on your own.
I knew I had to start this off with a book that I read 2 years ago but still can’t stop thinking about.
The Heart’s Invisible Furies – – John Boyne
I LOVE this book. I ask everyone I know if they have read this book, and if not, I tell them they need to pick it up. I read this book in December of 2017 and I remember making a Facebook post that said if you only have time to read one more book for the year, make it this one.
To be honest, I really didn’t have a huge interest in reading this. I remember seeing it was a Book of the Month pick and it was featured on an episode of All the Books, a podcast created by Book Riot. I had mild interest, so I did put it on hold through Libby. I couple months later I received and email that it was available. Usually in November/December, I don’t read a whole lot. I am super busy at work and have little energy when I get home. So I wasn’t reading anything at that particular time so I decided to give this one a shot. And I am so glad I did.
This book follows Cyril Avery. It spans across his whole life; from the time he is in his mother’s belly until the last days of his life. The novel spans decades, and in that time we really get to know Cyril. We get to watch him with his adoptive parents and their very strange relationship. We get to be there with him while he struggles with who he is and where he comes from. We are there for him when he finally finds love and happiness. We are there through all the ups and downs through important times in history. You really get to live a life along with Cyril.
I went through every emotion when I read this book. There were laugh out loud moments. Cyril is a very practical and humorous character. You cannot help but love him. There were moments in this that I cried. I really felt for the characters in this and what they were going through. There were some tough subject matters in this book, but they were beautifully done.
The Heart’s Invisible Furies clocks in at just under 600 pages, but it does not feel like 600 pages. It was just so compelling and it sucks you in from the very beginning. You can’t help but fall in love with all the characters from the minute you are introduced to them. Sometimes when books are this long, you think some stuff could have been cut out because it added nothing to the story. This is not the case for this one. Everything in here makes sense and if it wasn’t there, you would think you are missing out. It all just works perfectly together.
Please do yourself a favor and read this book. Spend some time with Cyril. I had no expectations when I went into this and it became one of my Top 3 All Time Favorite Books. It is so good.
Another year gone with another one right around the corner. With a New Year, come new goals. Just like most people, I have set some goals for myself. A few are geared toward my blog and the rest are for my reading life.
Get blog up and running
I started my blog in July of 2019 but I haven’t really put my all in to it. I was just doing the basics. 2020 is going to be my year of doing things that I enjoy and doing things that make me happy. Books and reading and writing are among those things. I am really going to focus on making this blog what I want it to be.
Post regularly
I have been very sporadic this year with posting. I have created a spread in my bullet journal where I will keep a schedule of what I want posted and when I want it up. I want to become more consistent with content.
Be more active on Social Media
This is a big one for me. I want to be more vocal on social media (in a positive way) rather than just being on the sidelines. For that reason, I have created a Bookstagram page. It is something I have been thinking about for awhile and finally did it. You can find me there at Bookish.ashley. All my other social media links are listed below.
Now, on to my reading goals for the year.
Read 50 books
At first glance, this number is pretty low for me. I have surpassed this number in 2018 and 2019. However, I am really focusing on reading books that I think are going to be top notch for me. Which leads me to my next goal.
Quality over Quantity
I do not want to read books just because. I don’t want to read them just to get my number up. I think this year I really discovered what I enjoy in a book, and I want to focus on that going into 2020.
Get physical TBR to reasonable number
I fall into the category of buying books to just buy them. When I decided I wanted to build up a library for myself, I was just buying anything and everything. Especially after discovering Book Outlet. Because of that, I have found that a lot of my owned books hold minimal interest to me. My goal for this year is to have my TBR at a comfortable number. To do that, I am going to focus on reading what I own for majority of the year. And if something does not interest me. then I am going to DNF and unhaul. I have plenty of clients that I can pass the books along to or I will donate them this spring for my city’s big used book sale.
Very strict on purchases
To help get that TBR number down, I am going to be stingy with what I purchase. Right now, I am thinking for every 10-15 owned books I read, I will be allowed to purchase 1-2 books. I will allow myself to purchase during the Book Outlet Black Friday Sale and of course the Big Book Bonanza my city has in July. But my goal there is to purchase books that I already read and loved and would like to have on my shelves. I want to be more selective when it comes to what is on my shelves.
Read more TOMES
I do love reading bigger books, especially if it is a genre I like or from an author I adore. I just choose not to read them because of the dreaded thought of “it will take too long” or “I could read x amount of books in the time it will take me to read this one.” These are thoughts I need to stop. This also falls into a previous goal of quality over quantity. I have so many books over 500 pages that I want to read. I am going to take the time to do it this year.
Utilize my Kindle
Its unrealistic to say that all my reading for 2020 is going to come from my physical TBR. There are going to be new releases that I will want to read but will not purchase. For that I want to use my Library and Kindle more. I do visit my local library branch, but I also use Libby/Overdrive/Hoopla. When I read on my Kindle Paperwhite, I love it. I also have an IPad with the Kindle app on it as well as the app on my IPhone. With limiting my book spending this year, reading ebooks is going to be a great alternative.
And there you have my 9 goals for the year. I am sure going into January I am going to think of a few more. When I do my mid-year check in, I throw those new goals in there.

I am going to be honest. I did not expect to get much reading done in December. I was feeling a little slumpy and burnt out. On top of that, December is my busiest month at work and I was working 10-11 hour days as well as extra days a week. I was planning to take this month off of reading to get ready for the new year; to feel refreshed and renewed. Now, I didn’t take a complete break from reading, but imagine my surprise when I checked my Goodreads and saw that I finished 8 books this month. 8! Some of these books I absolutely remember reading, but I really thought I read them in November. That’s how much November and December blend together for me. Either way, I read more than I ever thought I would this month. Let’s wrap this up.
Tampa – – Alissa Nutting
This was my first read of the month. I have been wanting to get to this for years, after hearing about it on one of the Book Riot podcasts. I have had it saved in my favorites on Hoopla ever since then. I was just a little hesitant and couldn’t decide if I wanted to listen to it via audiobook or read it physically, given the tough subject matter. I finally just decided to take the plunge and listen to it. And I am so glad I did. Do not get me wrong, this is not an easy read, but it is so well done. Nutting does not hold back and commits to this completely.
If you are not familiar with this book, it follows a twenty-something year old woman who finds her self sexually attracted to adolescent boys. To add to it, she is a an 8th grade teacher. This is a book on her acting on those feelings.
I have a full review, which you can find HERE. I could not put this book down. I found it so well done, but be warned. It is not an easy read.

The Invited – – Jennifer McMahon
I decided to read The Invited next, considering I have had it on hold with the library for what seems like forever. I was seeing it a little more on Booktube and thought it was about time.
This book follows a couple who decide to move to Vermont, buy a plot of land and build their dream house with the money the wife’s late father left them. What they do not know, but later find out, the land is haunted by a woman who lived there decades before. Helen, who is history teacher, becomes obsessed with this and purposely seeks out material that will guarantee the house be haunted.
What I have encountered quite often, especially in the thriller/horror/mystery genre, the beginning is strong. As the story progresses, it starts to lose its intrigue. That’s what started to happen here. At first, I was really into this. It started to shape up as a great ghost story. I was wanting that. I haven’t read a really good ghost story in a while. But towards the middle it started to lose me. By the end, I determined it was a good book, but not a great one that I was expecting.
Where it started to lose me was when fantasy elements started to come into play. I wanted just a paranormal story. That’s it. I didn’t get it. Another thing I am learning that I don’t like in books, (and will come into play later with another book I read) is when people who have no business playing detective and solving a crime or a mystery, become a detective and end up masterfully solving a crime or a mystery. It just isn’t realistic to me. Not that a ghost story is realistic, depending on how you see things. But in certain stories, that detective aspect doesn’t belong. And that didn’t belong here.
With that said, I did like this book. I enjoyed where the author was going with this, even if some parts of it were just meh. I liked the writing enough to want to read more from her. I have already saved a few on my Libby app and I think I am going to read Winter People next

The Twisted Ones – – T. Kingfisher
Keeping on trend, I decided to read another horror book. I originally heard about this one on “All the Books” a weekly Book Riot podcast that highlights that weeks new releases.
This story follows Mouse, who is asked by her father if she could go clean out her deceased grandmother’s house. What she finds is a hoarding situation. What she also finds is a journal, belonging to her late step-grandfather. He describes some terrifying things, which she thinks is nonsensical. Until she starts experiencing those things.
I can’t lie. There were parts of this that genuinely terrified me. Actually, most of this terrified me. The author created this atmosphere that just made me feel uncomfortable and I started thinking, well what if I was in this situation. And I got more uncomfortable.
Where it lost me was when we hit what was suppose to be the turning point, the action part of the story. We were introduced to a character that, in my opinion, did not fit the vibe of the story. All this creepiness that we were getting was completely destroyed when this character came into play. What was suppose to be the height of the scare, was a big let down. From there on out, I was taken out of the story and no longer had that uncomfortable feeling that comes with great storytelling.
This was on track to be a 4/4.5 star read, but sadly, I could not get back into it after that big let down.

The Night Circus – – Erin Morgenstern
It has been a few years since I last visited The Night Circus. I was dues for a reread. I decided to pick this one up, and I could not be any more delighted. The audiobook was wonderful. This book was as magical and beautiful as I remember it being the first time I read it.
I am admittedly not a big romance fan, but this romance could have not been done any better. And the circus! I am a sucker for anything set in a circus. Throw in the historical aspect and I am 100% on board.
If you have not read this yet, I can’t recommend it enough. When I read it the first time, I had no idea what it was about and I have to say I bought it based off the cover. I was so surprised how much I loved this. I still love this years later. It gives me so many feels, and I am ready to reread it a third time.

Review
This book was fascinating. That is the only way I can describe it without sounding some type of way. If I am being truly honest, I ate this book right up. I listened to the audiobook in less than 2 days, I couldn’t stop listening. I was so intrigued with this woman and what what going on inside her head. And how she thought her behavior was okay.
There is no discussion when it comes to this topic, it is very taboo. And gross, for lack of better words. If you are faint of heart or very closed minded, this is not for you. And by closed minded, I don’t mean disagreeing with this behavior, because I absolutely disagree with it, but being open to seeing that there are people in this world who have thoughts like this woman has, and who act on those thoughts. The biggest thing being, it is not always men who are pedophiles.
This is not an easy topic to read about, and it for sure can’t be an easy topic to write about. I appreciate that the author committed to this one hundred percent. She did not cut corners and she did not shy away from something to make it less uncomfortable. To make this believable it needed to go to the extremes and she went there. I think it made all the differences between being mediocre and outstanding and this was outstanding.
Do I agree with this behavior? Absolutely not! Do I need to agree with everything to make me love a book? Again, no. To me, that is what makes a great writer. Bringing me into a story that would never have any interest to me at all. I was so interested in Celeste, and her thoughts and behaviors, the sociopath side of her. Crazy always intrigues me.
I listened to the audiobook of this one and I thought it was excellent. It is free on Hoopla, so if this interest you at all, I highly recommend it. But be warned, there are very graphic descriptions of sexual content.

Why I Want to Read it
I was in the camp of loving Me Before You, the second and third books in the series were okay. After reading Me Before You, whenever I would see a Jojo Moyes book on the bargin table or a library book sale, I would pick it up. I am not a huge contemporary/romance reader, but I do like to keep them around when I need something light to read. This is one of those books that I ended up picking up somewhere for not a whole lot of money. The author is the sole reason I have this book on my shelf. I also have two others. But to be completely honest, I am not that excited to read any of them. They actually may end up in an unhaul soon.
Are her other books worth reading? I would hate to give these up because the covers are so pretty, but I am learning to DNF and unhaul when a book is not working for me or I no longer have any interest in in.

Welcome back to another weekly update! I managed to finish 3 books this week as well as find my (probably) least liked book of the year.
Continuing on my Shari Lapena rabbit hole I listened to 2 more of her books. First up is The Couple Next Door. I LOVED this book. Initially, I rated this a 4 but I think I am bumping it up to a 5 star read. I blew through this audiobook. I kept wanting to know more! Just like An Unwanted Guest there was particular nothing special about this writing, but the story just had me going. I can without a doubt say I did not see that final twist coming. That is what I want in my thrillers. To be shocked. And this had that for me. I do own a copy of this and was thinking of unhauling it a while ago and I am so glad I didn’t. This will for sure go on list of top thriller books of the year for me.
So after that audiobook, I had to jump right into another one of Shari Lapena’s. I picked up A Stranger in the House. Let me just say, they all can’t be winners. By no means was this a terrible book. I gave it a solid 3 stars. But out of the ones I read from this author so far, this was the one I was most bored by. I didn’t find the plot to be that interesting and I thought it was a little boring. Again, it was a very quick listen but I found myself zoning out of it. Not my favorite mystery/thriller but certainly not the worse.
The worst mystery/thriller I have read this year, and maybe ever was The Last Time I Saw You by the writing duo Liv Constantine. My goodness this was a mess. I am not sure how or why I continued it but I did and I finished and I gave it 2 stars, but that is being generous. I am not going to go into much detail here because this book deserves its own review, which I will have up Thursday Nov. 21. But know this was a big disappointment for me. I really enjoyed The Last Mrs. Parrish and was looking forward to reading this one. It was a big NOPE from me,

Why I Want to Read it
This is one of the last Sophie Kinsella books I have left to read. I was first introduced to this author through the Shopaholic Series, which to this day is one of my favorite series. SO naturally I had to seek out more from her. Granted, some of her stand alones are a little hit or miss for me, but I love them because they are light and fluffy and are sure to give me a laugh. I expect this one to be no different. I believe this is one of her shorter books, and involves a young women who ends up spilling everything to someone she doesn’t know. That’s all I know about it. I do have the audiobook waiting for me on Hoopla. I have come to really enjoy the audiobooks for this author. I like to have these around when I need something quick and fun and I think December will be the perfect time for it.
I have decided to start doing weekly reading updates. Sometimes, when I finish a book, I want to get my thoughts out but it may not be enough to fill a whole single review. So why not but everything in to one post?
This week was a fairly good reading week. I managed to start and finish two books and I have started three others that I currently am still reading.
What I Finished
Honestly, if it wasn’t for audiobooks, I would not have finished as many books as I have this year. This stands true for this week as well.
One Dark Throne – – Kendare Blake
This is the second installment in the YA Fantasy Series Three Dark Crowns. Like the first, I read this on audiobook through Hoopla. No one is more surprised than me that I am really enjoying a YA Fantasy, and I mean really enjoying it. I can’t go in to much detail, as this is the second in a series, but in short, this involves three sisters who are fighting to be the Queen. The each have a different power, a magic, to be used in obtaining the crown.
The first book left off on a cliffhanger that had me so intrigued. I wasn’t sure if i was going to continue on in the series, and then the ending happened, and I knew I had too. When I saw the second book was on Hoopla, I knew it was time to continue. Just like the first, I really enjoyed this. I love the characters, especially Arsinoe and I love the story going on. I ended up listening to this in two sittings, I wanted to now where this was going. I am excited to get to the third book in the next few weeks.

An Unwanted Guest – – Shari Lapena
This was an impulse listen. I actually had no intention of reading a Shari Lapena book because I heard mixed things about all of her books. But when I watched one of Aimee’s videos from Aimee Reads and she was discussing this in a pretty positive way, I figured I would check Overdrive and see if it was available. It was and i needed an audiobook so that’s that.
Quite honestly, I really enjoyed this one. An Unwanted Guest follows a group of people who end up at the same hotel in a middle of a snowstorm. And some one is found dead.
This was a breath of fresh air among the mysteries that I have been reading this year. There was nothing special about it, nothing super unique surrounding the mystery. But I liked it because of that. No ridiculous shock just because. Just simple writing for a simple whodunit mystery. Super enjoyable.

What I Started
This week was the release of my most anticipated book of 2019.
The Starless Sea – – Erin Morgenstern
I am currently about 30 pages into this and it is nothing less than I expected. Beautifully written with a stunning story to tell. It is taking me a bit to read it, as it is a little heavy in the fantasy department with some the chapters, but I am enjoying it. Plus, I don’t want to rush it and miss something.
The Couple Next Door – – Shari Lapena
Because I enjoyed An Unwanted Guest so much, I decided to pick up the one and only Shari Lapena book I own and give it a chance. I needed a new audiobook and this was available. I am about 30% of the way through and I am hooked. Again, there is nothing special about the writing, but I am enjoying where the story is going. I anticipate that I will have this done in the next few days.
The Last Time I Saw You – – Liv constantine
I loved The Last Mrs. Parrish when I read it last year, so I wanted to give their newest book a read. There isn’t much to say except I am not really enjoying it. I am sure, when I finish this I will have enough to say for a full review so I will keep this brief by saying this writing seems very messy and the story is not that good. I will continue on only because it is a quick read and it is a short book.

I’m back at it. Creating a TBR that is too much to handle. Such is life. Let’s get into it.
Currently Reading
These are the books that I am rolling over from October. Some, like Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo and The Likeness by Tana French, I have been reading for quite a while. If I am being honest, these two would be the ones that I will least likely get done. Ninth House because it is due back to the library very soon, and The Likeness because Tana French books usually take me a while to read. Don’t get me wrong, The Dublin Murder Squad series is very good. The are just really dense and I like to take my time.
The audiobook I am currently listening to is One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake. I really liked the audio version of Three Dark Crowns and I am excited to be back in this world.
I am also less than 100 pages into Needful Things by Stephen King. This was loaned to me from a client of mine. Usually when people loan me books, I try to read them as quickly as possible. This is another one that may take me a little while to read, as my copy is just under 1000 pages. So you may very well see this on my December TBR.
Library Books
My next section of books I have on loan through Overdrive. An Unwanted Guest by Sheri Lapena and CopTown by Karin Slaughter are both audiobooks. And as they are both mystery/thriller/suspense books, I know I can get through them rather quickly. Especially Karin Slaughter as I love her books. This one will be only my second of hers that is a standalone novel. I am hoping it is as good as her Will Trent Series. I have never read anything by Sheri Lapena, even though I do have one of her books on my shelves. I have heard mixed things about this author, but I figured why not try it. I didn’t have t wait long for this audiobook and I am kind of in the mood for a simple mystery so this will get read this month.
The other book I have through my library is the ebook version of The Last Time I saw You by Liv Constantine. Now, I fall on the side of really enjoying The Last Mrs. Parrish so i knew I wanted to read something else by this author. However, I have already the first few chapters of this book and I am not so sure about it. Of course, it is only a few chapters so It is hard to get a solid feel for it. So i am going to give it at least 100 pages before I make any decisions on it.
Physical TBR
The rest of the books are books that I currently own or have preordered. I am really trying to make an effort to read what I own, since my unread collection is overwhelming. I am going to make these 4 books a must read, so I can knock them off my TBR.
Up first, I have Circe by Madeline Miller. I was browsing Hoopla and saw that (finally) the audiobook is on there. I knew I had to read it this month after seeing that. I am super excited to read this book, but I was kind of holding out for the audio version. I was having no luck for a long time, so I am beyond thrilled that I finally found it.
These next two books were randomly selected for me on Goodreads. Each month on go to my “want to read” shelf on Goodreads and organize it randomly. The first two or three books that pop up will be added to my TBR for the month. This month The Anatomical Shape of a Heart by Jenn Bennett and The Wangs vs the World by Jade Chang both came up. Both have been on my TBR for a long time and should have been read by now. No excuses. The Anatomical Shape of a Heart, I am pretty sure was in my first Book Outlet order. Which was a long time ago. I honestly don’t know anything about it, and I don’t read that much YA, but I remember a lot of Booktubers talking about it, so I bought it. I spotlighted The Wangs vs the World HERE, so I am glad it came up. I am making it a priority to get both of these books done this month.
And my last read, which is my most anticipated book for 2019 is The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. I am so excited for this book. I have preordered three different copies and I cannot wait. I have no idea what this is about, but I do not care. The Night Circus is in my top 3 favorite books of all time and I have been not so patiently awaiting something else from this author.
If that wasn’t enough, I am planning on taking part in this round of The Buzzword Readathon. That readathon runs November 18-24. I will have a separate post highlighting what I plan to read for that. I am thinking it is only going to be 1 or 2 books, but we will see.
